What is a broken chord?

The notes of a broken chord are taken from any major or minor chord and instead of being played together simultaneously, are instead broken up and played one after the other.  For the ABRSM piano exams there is a slight variation in the way broken chords are played  at Grade 1 and 2 level.

C Major Broken Chord for piano – Grade 1

The C major chord consists of the notes C, E and G which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion, ascending and descending.  For the ABRSM syllabus at Grade 1 level, the notes are played in 6/8 time.  Go to C major broken chord

G Major Broken Chord for piano – Grade 1

The G major chord consists of the notes G, B and D which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion, ascending and descending.  For the ABRSM syllabus at Grade 1 level, the notes are played in 6/8 time.  Go to G major broken chord

F Major Broken Chord for piano – Grade 1

The F major chord consists of the notes F, A and C which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion, ascending and descending.  For the ABRSM syllabus at Grade 1 level, the notes are played in 6/8 time.  Go to F major broken chord

A Minor Broken Chord for piano – Grade 1

The A minor chord consists of the notes A,C and E which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion, ascending and descending.  For the ABRSM syllabus at Grade 1 level, the notes are played in 6/8 time.  Go to A minor broken chord

D Minor Broken Chord for piano – Grade 1

The D minor chord consists of the notes D, F and A which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion and 2nd inversion, ascending and descending.  For the ABRSM syllabus at Grade 1 level, the notes are played in 6/8 time.  Go to D minor broken chord

F Major Broken Chord for piano – Grade 2

The F major chord consists of the notes F, A, C and F which are played one after the other in root position, 1st inversion, 2nd inversion and finally root position  ascending and descending.  Go to F major broken chord – Grade 2
