The key of G major has 1 sharp (F#) in the key signature.  The notes of the G major scale are:  G  A  B  C  D  E  F#  G

The blues scale uses some of the notes from the major scale but modifies others

The notes of the G blues scale are:

G     Bb     C     Db     D     F     G

  1. The 1st note of the G blues scale uses the 1st degree of the G major scale – G
  2. The 2nd note of the G blues scale uses the 3rd degree of the G major scale (B) but lowers it by 1 semitone or half step – B flat
  3. The 3rd note of the G blues scale uses the 4th degree of the G major scale – C
  4. The 4th note of the G blues scale uses the 5th degree of the G major scale (D) but lowers it by one semitone or half step to D flat
  5. The 5th note of the G blues scales again uses the 5th degree of the G major scale (D) but does not lower it – D
  6. The 6th note of the G blues scale uses the 7th degree of the G major scale (F sharp) and lowers it by one semitone or half step – F

To create the G blues scale, the G major scale is modified in the following way:

  1. 1st degree – G
  2. Flattened 3rd degree – B flat
  3. 4th degree – C
  4. Flattened 5th degree – D flat
  5. 5th degree – D
  6. Flattened 7th degree – F natural

Notice that the 2nd (A) and 6th degrees (E) of the G major scale do not appear in the G blues scale.
