The key of F major has 1 flat in the key signature.  The notes of the F major scale are:  F   G   A   Bb   C   D   E   F

The blues scale uses some of the notes from the F major scale but modifies others

The notes of the F blues scale are:

F     Ab     Bb     Cb     C     Eb     F

  1. The 1st note of the F blues scale uses the 1st degree of the F major scale – F
  2. The 2nd note of the F blues scale uses the 3rd degree of the F major scale but lowers it by 1 semitone or half step – A flat
  3. The 3rd note of the F blues scale uses the 4th degree of the F major scale – B flat
  4. The 4th note of the F blues scale uses the 5th degree of the F major scale but lowers it by one semitone or half step to C flat
  5. The 5th note of the F blues scales again uses the 5th degree of the F major scale but does not lower it – C natural
  6. The 6th note of the F blues scale uses the 7th degree of the F major scale and lowers it by one semitone or half step – E flat

To create the F blues scale, the F major scale is modified in the following way:

  1. 1st degree – F
  2. Flattened 3rd degree – A flat
  3. 4th degree – B flat
  4. Flattened 5th degree – C flat
  5. 5th degree – C natural
  6. Flattened 7th degree – E flat

Notice that the 2nd (G) and 6th degrees (D) of the F major scale do not appear in the F blues scale.
