The key of D major has 2 sharps (F# and C#) in the key signature.  The notes of the D major scale are:  D   E   F#  G  A   B   C#  D

The blues scale uses some of the notes from the major scale but modifies others

The notes of the D blues scale are:

D     F     G     Ab     A     C     D

  1. The 1st note of the D blues scale uses the 1st degree of the D major scale – D
  2. The 2nd note of the D blues scale uses the 3rd degree of the D major scale (F sharp) but lowers it by 1 semitone or half step – D natural
  3. The 3rd note of the D blues scale uses the 4th degree of the D major scale – G
  4. The 4th note of the D blues scale uses the 5th degree of the D major scale (A) but lowers it by one semitone or half step to A flat
  5. The 5th note of the D blues scales again uses the 5th degree of the D major scale (A) but does not lower it – A
  6. The 6th note of the D blues scale uses the 7th degree of the D major scale (C sharp) and lowers it by one semitone or half step – C natural

To create the D blues scale, the D major scale is modified in the following way:

  1. 1st degree – D
  2. Flattened 3rd degree – F
  3. 4th degree – G
  4. Flattened 5th degree – A flat
  5. 5th degree – A natural
  6. Flattened 7th degree – C natural

Notice that the 2nd (E) and 6th degrees (B) of the D major scale do not appear in the D blues scale.
