The key of B major has 5 sharps (F#, C#, G#, D#, A#) in the key signature.  The notes of the B major scale are:   B   C#   D#   E   F#   G#   A#   B

The blues scale uses some of the notes from the B major scale but modifies others

The notes of the B blues scale are:

B     D     E     F     F#     A     B

  1. The 1st note of the B blues scale uses the 1st degree of the B major scale – B
  2. The 2nd note of the B blues scale uses the 3rd degree of the B major scale but lowers it by 1 semitone or half step – D
  3. The 3rd note of the B blues scale uses the 4th degree of the B major scale – E
  4. The 4th note of the B blues scale uses the 5th degree of the B major scale but lowers it by one semitone or half step to F
  5. The 5th note of the B blues scales again uses the 5th degree of the B major scale but does not lower it – F sharp
  6. The 6th note of the B blues scale uses the 7th degree of the B major scale and lowers it by one semitone or half step – A

To create the B blues scale, the B major scale is modified in the following way:

  1. 1st degree – B
  2. Flattened 3rd degree – D
  3. 4th degree – E
  4. Flattened 5th degree – F
  5. 5th degree – F sharp
  6. Flattened 7th degree – A

Notice that the 2nd (C#) and 6th degrees (G#) of the B major scale do not appear in the B blues scale.

Please note that the fingerings suggested are only ‘possible’ fingerings for playing the B flat blues scale on the piano.  When improvising using the notes of the B flat blues scale with the right hand, fingerings may vary depending on which note the scale begins and the order or number of notes being played.
